The Penya Blaugrana de Les Corts, a member of the Federació de Penyes del Barcelonès Oest, once again played a leading role in its neighbourhood’s festivities with the 6th Children’s Chess Open, jointly organised with the chess section of L’Espiga de Les Corts. This well-established event has become one of the activities most eagerly anticipated by younger participants, even setting a new participation record in its 2026 edition. A total of 111 boys and girls aged up to 14 took part, surpassing the figure recorded last year.
Once again, the competition followed a seven-round Swiss system, with games played at a time control of 5 minutes per player plus a 3-second increment per move. This format allowed the young participants to demonstrate their skills in an atmosphere full of excitement, camaraderie and sportsmanship. As usual, all the boys and girls received a commemorative gift for taking part, as well as breakfast provided by the organising bodies.
A firmly established tournament in the Les Corts neighbourhood
The strong turnout for this sixth edition of the Children’s Chess Open – especially considering that rain prevented it from being held outdoors – confirms the steady growth of an initiative that demonstrates PB Les Corts commitment to grassroots sport and the promotion of educational values among young people. The tournament has also become one of the flagship activities of the Les Corts festivities, as part of which the penya had also held a fellowship lunch for its members a few days earlier. This clearly reflects PB Les Corts’ close ties to and commitment to its neighbourhood.
