The Penya Barcelonista de Vidreres (Federació Gironès, Selva, Garrotxa, i Pla de l’Estany) presented the 2nd Martí Vergés Award during the second edition of the Vidreres Sports Night, recently held in this town in Girona. This year, the supporters’ club chose to recognize young athletes Cèlia Bernadó, Irene Álvarez, and Zayra Salcedo, who were crowned champions at the European Twirling Championship held in Ireland last July.
Beyond their sporting success, the jury especially valued their behavior during the event, highlighting their solidarity and camaraderie towards other competitors. In addition to symbolic recognition, the awardees received shopping vouchers worth 100 euros to be redeemed at local businesses in Vidreres, further strengthening ties between PB Vidreres and the town’s economy.
The award is named after footballer Martí Vergés, born in Vidreres and a member of FC Barcelona’s first team from 1958 to 1966. It aims to honor sportsmanship and fair play in any sporting discipline, inspired by the player’s character. Vergés was never sent off, and according to some accounts, he often insisted that once the referee makes a decision, there’s no point in protesting or confronting it. Through this initiative, PB Vidreres reaffirms its commitment to sportsmanship and its motto: “We are more than a Penya.”
