The PB Lleó de Dues Cues climbs stairs for a good cause

A member of the Czech supporters’ club climbed stairs for an hour every day and added up all the steps to raise nearly €13,000 for a home palliative care organisation

The spirit of solidarity among Barça supporters’ clubs around the world translates into all kinds of actions to help those most in need. One of the most original initiatives took place recently in the Czech Republic, led by Roman Janál, a member of the Penya Barcelonista Lleó de Dues Cues (FCB World Federation). His initiative consisted of spending an hour every day for a week climbing the same stairs in the town of Mařatice, in the east of the Czech Republic. These stairs have a total of 153 steps, which Roman climbed over and over again.

For every step climbed, Roman added 1 CZK (€0.04) to a fundraising campaign, with all proceeds going to PAHOP, a palliative care and hospice health institute in their region. At the end of the week of this campaign, the total amount raised was 311,171 CZK, equivalent to €12,854.24. A contribution of 4,152 CZK (€172) from PB Lleó de Dues Cues was added to this figure, as well as other donations from members of the organisation who also wanted to contribute. The final amount will be even higher, as the donation campaign will remain open for a few more weeks for anyone who wants to contribute.

An idea that emerged after the COVID-19 lockdown

As its protagonist Roman Janál explains, this initiative arose after the months of lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The need to regain good lifestyle habits and the importance of doing exercise, together with his great spirit of solidarity, prompted the PB Lleó de Dues Cues member to start this initiative in his neighbourhood. It was shortly before the Christmas holidays in 2020, and since then he has repeated it in 2021, 2022, 2024 and now 2025. Throughout this time, Roman has been joined by other people who have taken part in the initiative, either accompanying him on his stair climbs or adding their donations, which are always given to a local social organisation.
