On Sunday 26 January, the Pavelló Municipal d’Esports de Montmeló was the venue for the presentation of the teams that make up this season’s handball section of the Penya Blaugrana de Montmeló (Federació de Penyes del Vallès). In total, there are 112 athletes who will defend the colours of the supporers’ club in different categories. The senior (two women’s teams and one men’s team), U-14 (one men’s team and one women’s team) and U-12 (men’s team) suqads will be federated and will compete with teams from all over Catalonia. For their part, the PB Montmeló U-10, U-8 and U-5 teams will compete at a regional level.
This presentation highlighted the clear commitment of PB Montmeló to promote grassroots handball, and particularly women’s handball. In this objective, the penya counts on the important collaboration of the Montmeló schools, which also work to raise awareness of handball among the boys and girls of this municipality. In addition, the PB Montmeló also adheres to the Equality Plan promoted by the Catalan Handball Federation, which seeks to correct the inequalities between men’s and women’s handball at the federated level.
Also in futsal
The promotion of grassroots sport, especially women’s sport, is also reflected in another powerful section of the Penya Blaugrana de Montmeló: futsal. The FC Barcelona penya has six women’s teams between the U-12 and senior categories, all of them competing in the Catalan league, as well as two other men’s teams in the senior category. Thus, it is worth highlighting the work of the penya in promoting futsal among the youngest female players in this region.
